Building a trusted repository of knowledge and ideas outside my head has been a game-changer. I’ve found that a flat directory of text files linking to eachother works well. For a sales pitch on conceptual note-taking, see the Conceptual Note-Taking note.
So things remain manageable, I keep file count to a minimum. Trees provide structure and encapsulation through hierarchy; headings of a document form a tree, so use them. I only split things up when there’s some structural reason to, and a text file approaching biblical length is not one of them.
Throughout my notes I try and accompany any fact or judgement with an attribution. An opinion or conclusion not immediately obvious bears little weight without its source. And Hold on, where does this come from again? is an itchy itch indeed.
Some notes… could use tact. On the other hand, I don’t want to restrict my thinking over the possibility of offending someone. Though maybe that’s naive of me.
